The First University Karate Club in Canada

1963. That was the year Masami Tsuruoka began teaching at the University of Toronto. For seven years, Tsuruoka Sensei watched over UTKC (that’s our swag name) as he paved the way for karate to thrive in Canada. In 1970 he passed the torch to Tominaga Sensei, who has led our club ever since. His mission is the same now as it was then – to ensure that Torontonians and U of T students have the opportunity to practice karate without neglecting the key to success as a karate-ka good basics.

The mission is the same now as it was then—to ensure that Torontonians and U of T students have the opportunity to practice karate without neglecting the key to success as a karate-ka : good basics.

We’re managed by a high-flying team of volunteer executives. Their job is to ensure that the club runs smoothly and our members get the best possible karate experience they can get. Everyone who joins has access to training camps, all-day workouts, tournaments, parties and other fun events.

UTKC won’t serve you a McDojo. We’re trailblazers. We were jump-kicking before Bruce Lee entered the dragon. Unlike other dojos, we don’t charge hundreds of dollars for events that are crucial to a martial artist’s training.

UTKC is non-for-profit and officially sanctioned at the U of T Athletic Centre. As official members of the Ontario Karate Federation and the National Karate Association, we’re as legit as legit can get. Check out our club constitution here. UTKC is also proud to be the flagship dojo of Jinbukai Canada, an umbrella organization set up by Sensei Tominaga. This makes us a big name in martial arts.
