Summer Camp - August 2000

August 2000
Natsu Gasshuku/Summer Camp was held this year during the Civic Holiday long weekend on August 5th, 6th, and 7th and was organized this year by the duo of Nancy Lam and Chris Achong. We trained at Hart House Farm in Caledon, Ontario, about an hour's drive north-west of Toronto, and had three good days of solid karate training and camaraderie.

Black belt candidates underwent their grading tests during Gasshuku with Tanya Samman getting awarded her black belt (1st dan) after years of training and prior to her move out to Alberta. Congratulations Tanya! The results of the other gradings will be announced at the black belt dinner in the fall.

Other highlights this year: We had some really fantastic meals prepared by the various meal crews. Great work folks! This summer also saw Sensei field test his brand new tent after many summer camps spent rooming in the bunk house.

Last but not least, a whole new crop of UTKC karate-ka got to witness for the first time the legendary "Enduro-Man" kumite video footage of Shazam Williams. It was from the Montreal Inter-University Tournament in 1996 (97?) and featured a match involving Shaz.

As the match went on both fighters just got slower and s..l..o..w..e..r.. and s... l... o... w... e... r... forever earning Shazam the nickname "Enduro-Man" in our club. We should all thank Shaz for being such a good sport about this over the years. The importance of cardio-vascular conditioning has been hammered home forever!
